Born in the USA, But Do You Belong?

Please join us on July 22 at 5:30 p.m. for a timely conversation about citizenship and belonging.

Ideas about citizenship and belonging in the United States have long been contested; no less so today.

Moderated by Shockoe Institute President and CEO Marland Buckner, the panel will feature the Honorable Roger Gregory, immediate past Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit; Dr. Samantha Seeley, Associate Professor of History at the University of Richmond; and Chief Anne Richardson of the Rappahannock Tribe, the first woman to lead a Virginia Indian tribe since the early eighteenth century.

Anchored in Dr. Seeley’s book Race, Removal, and the Right to Remain: Migration and the Making of the United States, this program will explore how political and judicial power have historically shaped the legal meaning of citizenship, and how those definitions have shaped people’s ability participate in American public life. We look forward to a robust discussion regarding the birthright citizenship debate and what it reveals about the health and future of our civic square.
